04. Essential Intensive Care on Obstetric Emergencies Workshop of OGSM

This simulation course aims to teach practical skills for Obstetricians to handle emergencies. Emergencies are uncommon but when it occurs it can be catastrophic at times to the mother and baby. The course aims to refresh skills and to conduct them in a systematic and organised manner with multi professional approach.

This course teaches practical tips for the Obstetrician to improve their skills in handling maternal collapse, Massive obstetric haemorrhage, Shoulder dystocia, undiagnosed breech deliveries, Cord Prolapse and Caesarean deliveries. The course is conducted using short lectures, videos and skills break out stations. At this breakout stations participants are divided into groups and are taught various skills.

Multi professional Team Dynamics is an essential component to execute effective emergency care and this will be emphasised.
Focus is also directed to improving Quality and safety in emergency Obstetric care.

08. Incorporating basic sciences in to simulation training

Overview

A workshop to explore how basic sciences such as surgical anatomy, fetal anatomy, fetal development and human factors can be applied to practice through simulation training

Objectives

Learning applied basic sciences and exploring simulation teaching methods

Activities

0800 hrs. – Objectives of the workshop by the Chairperson
0815 hrs. – Anterior abdominal wall anatomy, laparoscopic entry techniques, and a structured scheme for diagnostic laparoscopy
0845 hrs. – The cave of Retzius and laparoscopic Burch colposuspension
0915 hrs. – The pelvic side wall, Ureterolysis and identifying the uterine artery – cadaveric simulation
0945 hrs. – The retroperitoneal space. Application of surgical anatomy for lymphadenectomy for malignant disease
1015 hrs. – Coffee / Tea break
1045 hrs. The POD, Rectovaginal septum and uterosacrals – applied surgical anatomy for the removal of rectovaginal endometriosis
1115 hrs – Nerves of the pelvis – appreciation of anatomy for nerve sparing surgery and presacral neurectomy for intractable chronic pelvic pain
1145 hrs. – Complications in laparoscopic surgery and the use of simulation to prepare for it.
1215 hrs. – Fetal anatomy, fetal development and medical physics – application in fetal medicine scanning
1250 hrs. Trainee led simulation training for non technical skills
1320 hrs. – Review of the workshop, Evaluation and feedback.
1330 hrs. – Close of session
